Analyzing identified impacts

After the impact analysis engine calculates the impacts that will result from the implementation tasks, a Change Analyst analyzes these impacts. This analysis can help you determine whether a Change is too disruptive to complete at this time. It also gives you the information you need to make any needed modifications before the Change proceeds.

About this task

The Change Analyst can perform a number of operations to thoroughly inspect the impacts of the Change:
  • View a summary of the CIs that were identified by the impact analysis engine as impacted by the Change.
  • Calculate the impacts of individual tasks or target CIs.
  • Relying on historical data analysis or prior knowledge, manually specify additionally CI or asset impacts.
  • View a topology that graphically displays the task target CIs and the CIs that are impacted by the tasks. You can manipulate controls in the topology in various ways to view different aspects of the target and impacted CIs.
  • Viewing an impact summary
    You can view a summary of the impacts that were identified by the impact analysis engine.
  • Calculating and selecting impacts for targets of a task
    At any time, you can calculate the impacts of an individual implementation task. For example, you might want to calculate impacts of a task for which you have added additional targets or removed targets, modified the outage values, or made some other modification. After you calculate the task impacts, you can select one or more of the impacts to record them as impacts for the task.
  • Calculating and selecting impacts for target CIs or assets
    You might want to calculate the impacts of individual target CIs or assets when a new target is added to the task, or when new CI relationships are added to the configuration management database (CMDB). After you calculate the target CI or asset impacts, you can select one or more of the impacts to record them as impacts for the target.
  • Manually specifying additional impacts
    You can perform this operation to manually assign impacts to a task. For example, you might want to manually assign an impact about which you have special knowledge, and which the impact analysis engine did not identify. Typically, you perform this operation only occasionally.
  • Viewing an impact analysis topology
    The impact analysis topology provides a graphical representation of the CIs that are defined as task targets and the related CIs that are impacted by the tasks. You can manipulate the topology in several ways to obtain information about task impacts.
