Creating IT assets

You create an IT asset very much like you create other assets. However, there are some additional features available for IT assets.

About this task

An IT asset is any asset that belongs to the hierarchy of the top-level IT asset class structure identifier. When you create an asset, you can classify the asset as an IT asset by associating it with a classification on the Specifications tab in the Assets application. In addition, if you specify an item that is classified as an IT asset when you create an asset record, the asset inherits the classification associated with the item that you specify.

Procedure

  1. On the toolbar of the Assets application, click the New Asset icon.
  2. In the Asset Description field, type a description.
  3. In the Rotating Item field, specify an item.
  4. Optional: If this asset has a parent, in the Parent field, specify a value. If the parent asset is associated with a location, the location identifier is copied to the Location field. Only assets that are in non-inventory locations can be assigned as parents. You cannot build a hierarchy when assets are in a storeroom.
  5. In the Classification field on the Specifications tab, specify an IT asset classification for the asset. If you specified an IT asset in step 3, the application displays the classification, and no action is required for this field.
  6. Optional: Type information in the other fields as needed.
  7. Click Save Asset.

What to do next

After you create an IT asset, you can use other tabs and windows to add other details about the asset. Many features specific to IT assets are available on the IT Details tab. For specific instructions, see the related topics.
