Using Integration Composer to import deployed asset data from discovery tools

You can import deployed asset data by using Integration Composer together with an integration adapter.

Integration Composer is an integration tool that transforms and imports inventory data about deployed hardware and software. The data is imported from a discovery or system management tool database into the Maximo® database tables for deployed assets. The Maximo database is the repository that is used by Control Desk. Integration Composer is the only supported integration tool for importing or updating deployed assets.

Integration Composer supports various external database sources that maintain information that is collected by discovery and system management tools.

To gather data about deployed assets, a discovery tool scans computers, network devices, and network printers that are deployed in an enterprise. It then records information about the hardware and software it finds on those assets.

An integration adapter is needed to describe the data that is being imported and provide instructions on how to transform the data. The data is described with a data schema, and the instructions are provided in a mapping.

For information about integration adapters and the discovery tools that are supported, see Discovery Tools Supported in the IBM® Control Desk wiki.

To facilitate the importing of data from these sources, Integration Composer provides an integration adapter for each of the discovery and system management tools such as IBM Tivoli® Application Dependency Discovery Manager. After installing Integration Composer, you can use it and the appropriate integration adapter to import your discovered data into the Maximo database.

Note: To import data from other discovery or system management tool databases, you can create your own integration adapter through Integration Composer. In this case, you must take additional steps in Integration Composer to create a data schema and a mapping. .
