Troubleshooting applet loading

If you are having problems while using applications that contain graphical applets, use this checklist.

About this task

If applets are slow to load, your system might not be configured to support their use.

Procedure

  1. If you do not have a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) console enabled for your browser, the applet jar files cannot be loaded. To check your applet support, visit the Java applet test website at http://java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp.
  2. Click Control Panel > Java to view the Java Control Panel. On the Advanced tab, look at Default Java for browsers. If the box for your browser is not checked, check it and click OK.
  3. The Java bit version must match your browser's bit version. If your browser is 32-bit, your Java must be 32-bit. If your browser is 64-bit, your Java must be 64-bit. If you have a 32-bit browser and 64-bit Java, or a 64-bit browser and 32-bit Java, applets will not load.
  4. In the Java Control Panel, open the General tab and click View... in the Temporary Internet Files section. In the Java Cache Viewer you see a list of cached Java applets. This list should include these files:
    • dummyClassesDiagrammer.jar
    • flowmapapplet.jar
    • jviews-diagrammer.jar
    • jviews-framework-lib.jar
  5. In the Java Control Panel, open the General tab and click Settings... in the Temporary Internet Files section. The amount of disk space for storing temporary files must be large enough to contain the applet files. If it is set all the way to the small end of the scale, applets cannot be cached.
