Automatically updating CIs, assets, and locations

A Change results in modifications to configuration items (CIs), assets, locations, or some combination of these. You can specify the updates that will result from a Change at any time before the change is completed. You can update configuration item (CI) attributes, asset attributes, and location attributes.

About this task

You can modify CI attributes either on the Change as a whole or on individual implementation tasks that affect CIs. When the Change is completed, the attribute values of a CI in the configuration management database (CMDB) are set to the values specified by the Change.
  • Updating CIs that were modified by a Change
    When a Change is implemented, it typically modifies the attributes of the affected CIs. The next discovery update will reflect the updated attribute values. In order to associate the Changes with the Change record, and avoid having to update the CIs after discovering a disparity during an audit, you can open a request from within the Change to have the CI records modified.
  • Modifying CI attributes that were modified by a task
    Use this task to specify configuration item (CI) attributes that are modified by a task. For example, a task that adds memory to a server modifies the memory attribute for that server. After you specify a modification, the CI is updated accordingly when the task is completed.
  • Changing the status of an asset
    You can update the status of an asset from work order–based applications, without having to go to the Assets application to do so. When the work order completes, the status of the asset is automatically updated.
  • Modifying asset attributes
    Use this task to specify asset attributes that are modified by a Change.
  • Modifying location attributes
    Use this task to specify location attributes that are modified by a Change.
