Calculating impacts manually

You can calculate the impacts of all of the implementation tasks at any time during the Change process, before or after workflow triggers the automatic impact analysis. When you are performing an initial assessment of a Change, a list of potential impacts is very useful information. A Change Analyst who wants to obtain a quick idea of the scope of a Change can quickly see which CIs or assets are potentially impacted.

About this task

You can manually calculate impacts multiple times. When an impact analysis is performed, any results from previous executions are replaced with the results of the current execution.

When you perform this task, the impact analysis engine performs the same calculations that it performs during the workflow-driven impact analysis. You might want to calculate task impacts after you add a new task, modify the outage value of a task, and so on.

To calculate implementation task impacts, perform the following steps:

Procedure

  1. Ensure that the Change is open in the Changes application.
  2. You can use either of two methods for manually calculating impacts, as follows:
    • Select one of the following actions, depending on the type of analysis you want to conduct:
      • Impact Analysis > Calculate Implementation Tasks Impacts to perform a calculation using the impact analysis rules.
      • Impact Analysis > Retrieve Impacts from Historical Analysis to perform a calculation based on historically identified impacts.
    • Open the Impacts tab, open the Summary tab, and click one of the following buttons, depending on the type of analysis you want to conduct:
      • Calculate Impacts to perform a calculation using the impact analysis rules.
      • Detect Historical Impacts to perform a calculation based on historically identified impacts.

After the engine performs the impact analysis, navigate to the Impacts tab, if you are not already in this view. The results of the analysis are displayed. You can view a topology graph that shows task target CIs and impacted CIs; view a summary of the identified impacts; and perform a number of operation to manage the impacts. For more information, see the "Analyzing identified impacts" section.
