Promotion considerations
During the promotion of assets and configuration items (CIs), the integration identifier is used to check whether the asset or CI already exists. If a duplicate is found, the deployed asset or actual CI is linked to the existing authorized asset or CI. However, if the existing authorized asset or CI is already linked to another deployed asset or actual CI, the promotion fails. This is because creating a new asset or CI is likely to create a duplicate.
Three-hop linking rule
Under the three-hop linking rule, however, the promotion succeeds and a new asset or CI is created with a duplicate integration identifier.
The three-hop linking rule allows links to be created between actual CIs and deployed assets in the following manner:
- When a deployed asset is linked to an authorized asset and an actual CI is found, with a matching integration identifier. In this case, the actual CI is linked to the deployed asset.
- When an actual CI is linked to an authorized CI and a deployed asset is found, with a matching integration identifier. In this case, the deployed asset is linked to the actual CI.
