Configuration for IBM Endpoint Manager for Software Use Analysis 2.x adapter

You can import IBM® Endpoint Manager for Software Use Analysis data into Control Desk after you do some configuration.

About this task

IBM Endpoint Manager SUA 2.x supports both IBM Endpoint Manager for Software Use Analysis 2.0 and IBM Endpoint Manager for Software Use Analysis 2.1.

Most computer properties that the IBM Endpoint Manager SUA 2.x adapter depends on are in the “Inventory and License” site. The exception is the Virtual Machines property of the Virtual Machine Host information analysis of the "Virtual Endpoint Manager" site. The Software inventory and catalog data comes from a site named “IBM Software Inventory”. Relevant analyses of these sites must be globally activated before their properties become available to be added and imported into IBM Endpoint Manager for Software Use Analysis.

Procedure overview:
  1. Ensure that IBM Endpoint Manager is installed.
  2. Enable the sites that you want.
  3. Activate the site analyses.
  4. Configure properties by using the IBM Endpoint Manager for Software Use Analysis console.

Procedure

  1. Install IBM Endpoint Manager for Software Use Analysis Tivoli® Endpoint Manager server.
  2. Open the Tivoli Endpoint Manager console with a Master Operator account.
  3. From the menu, select Go > BigFix Management.
  4. In the console navigator, select the License Overview dashboard.
  5. In the BigFix License Overview dashboard, go to the Lifecycle Management section.
  6. Under Available Sites, click Enable next to sites that have the type of information you want.
    If Enable
If you want Hardware and OS-based information Enable the BES Inventory and License site.
If you want Software information Enable the IBM Software Inventory site.
If you want Mobile device information Enable the Mobile Device Management site.
If you have virtual machines and want their relationship to their host computers to be viewed and managed in Control Desk Enable the Virtual Endpoint Manager site.

Then, run the Fixlet ID 71 (Virtual Machine Probe) to get "Virtual Machines" information.

To obtain ESX information, also enable Patches for ESX site.

To obtain ESXi information, also enable Patches for ESXi site. Install the BigFix Relay, then install the BES Server Plugin Service, and deploy the Management Extender for VMware vCenter.

  7. For all of the sites you enabled in the previous step, activate their analysis and subscribe the computers to the sites. To activate the analysis, do these steps:
    1. From the menu, select Go > All Content.
    2. In the console navigator, go to Analyses > By Site, and click a site.
    3. In the Analyses panel, select the analysis, then click Activate in the bottom panel. Repeat this step for all of the analyses. If you have a large environment, it might take several minutes to process. You can check the status of the collection by selecting in the navigator, Analyses > By Site > <the site you want to check> > By Status > Activate Globally. In the Analyses: panel, check the Results tab.
    4. To subscribe the computers, from the menu select Go > All Content.
    5. In the console navigator, go to Sites > External sites.
  8. Click one of the sites you enabled. On the right panel, go to Computer Subscriptions and select All Computers.
  9. Tivoli Endpoint Manager and IBM Endpoint Manager manage properties that are based on platform. The following is a list of analyses that are needed for each platform
Note: If a platform is not managed, the analyses of the platform are not needed.

The adapter tries to identify the relationship of virtual machines and their host machines. To accomplish that you must do all the ESX and ESXi configurations that are described in the first step of steps in this procedure. And the following properties must be added to IBM Endpoint Manager for Software Use Analysis:
    • For ESX platforms:
      • “Hypervisor Host information” property of the “Hypervisor Host information” analysis of the “Inventory and License” site.
      • “Virtual ID of VM Guests” property of the “Virtual Machine Guest information” analysis of the “Inventory and License” site.
    • For ESXi platforms:
      • "Virtual Machines” property of the “Virtual Machine Host information” analysis of the “Virtual Endpoint Manager” site.

IBM Endpoint Manager for Software Use Analysis configuration:

  1. By default, only seven computer properties from IBM Endpoint Manager for Software Use Analysis have values. The properties are Id, Remote id, Name, Dns name, Last scan, Ip address, and Os. To obtain values for more properties, these properties must be added to IBM Endpoint Manager for Software Use Analysis by using their Computer Properties Management UI.

The values become available after you do an immediate manual import, or after the next scheduled import. See the data mapping topics for details on properties that must be added to IBM Endpoint Manager for Software Use Analysis for any value that is expected on the Control Desk side.

When a property is added to IBM Endpoint Manager for Software Use Analysis, you can give it any name that you prefer. Control Desk can link it to the Integration Composer property name by using its site, analysis, and property ids.

Note: You can add any properties outside of the mentioned sites. Those properties display in the adapter; however, you must add your own mapping expression to move the data to Control Desk .
