Previewing your naming rule links before promotion

Before promoting anything, you are encouraged to use the Configuration Items application to preview the links that would be created using the existing set of naming rules. In preview mode, you can view the promotion results, but no actual linking occurs.

1. On the navigation bar, click Go To > IT Infrastructure > Configuration Items.
2. Filter the record list of authorized CIs to display only the authorized CIs that are:
   • From the top-level authorized classification that you intend to promote your actual CIs to
   • Not already linked to an actual CI
3. Select the Link to Actual CIs action.
4. Check the Preview Linking box.
   Note: If you are promoting many actual CIs, but only a small subset need linking or could be linked, you can do the following to improve promotion performance: Link the CIs from the CI application before promoting, and then disable the naming rules during the promotion process. But use preview mode to do even this linking, until you are confident with your naming rules.
