Enabling and viewing the naming rules for promotion

Use the Actual Configuration Items application to enable, disable, or view the naming rules when promoting an actual CI.

Procedure

  1. On the navigation bar, click Go To > IT Infrastructure > Actual Configuration Items.
  2. Filter the record list to display a list of top-level actual CIs for the classification you want to promote.
  3. Select your filtered list of actual CIs.
  4. Select the Create Authorized Configuration Item action.
  5. To view the naming rules:
    1. On the Create Authorized Configuration Item window, click View Naming Rules.

The Rules to link Actual CIs with CIs window displays the naming rules used during promotion. The classifications of the selected actual CIs are used to find CIs with the corresponding authorized classification. Existing unlinked CIs with the corresponding classification and matching attributes and relationships will be linked to the currently selected, top-level actual CI.

    2. Click Cancel to return to the Create Authorized Configuration Item window.
  6. To enable or disable the naming rules:
    1. On the Create Authorized Configuration Item window, either enable the use of naming rules by checking the Check for Existing CIs Using Naming Rules box, or disable the use of naming rules by unchecking the box.

The default is an empty check box (naming rules disabled). If the box is checked (naming rules enabled), before creating a new CI for a top-level actual CI, the promotion process checks for existing CIs that match the naming rules for the actual CI classification. Regardless of whether this option is enabled or disabled, the promotion process attempts to find matching CIs using DIS GUIDs.

    2. Click OK.
