Viewing product and component relationships in a software bundle
Use the Software Catalog application to view the relationships between the currently displayed software and other software associated with it in a software bundle.
About this task
In the Software Catalog application, the parent-child relationships displayed on the Product Relationships tab represent the software component relationships in a software bundle.
On the Product Relationships tab, the Relationship field shows which software is free and which has an additional charge associated with it. PARENT_PROGRAM indicates software whose price is based on the usage of the currently displayed software named in the record heading section of the tab. In the Children section, any FREE components noted are no-charge components included under the same license agreement, and any CHARGED components noted are included under the same license agreement but at additional cost (an agent, for example). Similarly, any MANAGED components noted are managed by the parent program. The MANAGED component is always charged; that is, it is included under the same license agreement but at additional cost.
On the Product Relationships tab, when the current catalog record originates with Asset Discovery for z/OS®, the field values are defined there and cannot be changed here. When the current catalog record originates with any other discovery tool, or as manual entries, the field values on the tab can be changed. The latter allows people using other discovery tools to define the same kind of bundle relationships that the aforementioned products already do.
Software bundle relationships are informational only; they are not validated by Control Desk, nor are they used by any report or linked to any other application. If you use Asset Discovery for z/OS, any bundle relationships established in those applications, once imported, appear as read-only values here.
Also note that if a software bundle is defined in the knowledge base, a user of Tivoli® Asset Discovery for Distributed can use these software bundle relationships to identify a deployed software instance as a component of a bundle, and Control Desk can import these relationships. But it is not possible to import such relationships for software instances that originate with other discovery tools.
Similarly regarding Tivoli Asset Discovery for Distributed, that discovery tool will find the data to calculate the processor value units (PVUs) for a software bundle (along with the software instances installed, their usage, the computers they are installed on, and so on), and that can be imported into Control Desk and the Software Catalog application. In this case the total PVUs captured is for the bundle. Currently Tivoli Asset Discovery for Distributed is the only discovery tool that collects PVU data.
The steps for viewing product and component relationships in a software bundle follow.
