Reserved capacity
To reserve software license capacity for future use, create a reservation for the quantity of license capacity that you want to allocate in the future.
You can create reservations for license capacity in the Licenses application. In addition, when you create work orders or activities that require licenses, a reservation for the license capacity is automatically created when the work order or activity is approved.
Licenses application reservations
In the Licenses application, use the Add/Modify Reservation action to reserve license capacity for use at a later time. You can specify the name of the person who requested the reservation, the date of the request, and the date that the license is required.
Work Order Tracking application reservations
On the Plans tab in the Work Order application, you can specify one or more software licenses that are needed to complete the work order. You can specify the name of the person who requested the license capacity, the date of the request, and the date that the license is required.
When the work order is approved, a reservation is created for the requested license capacity.
When a work order is completed, canceled, or closed, all license reservations associated with the work order are deleted.
Activities and Tasks application reservations
On the Resources tab in the Activities and Tasks application, you can specify one or more software licenses that are needed to complete the activity. You can specify the name of the person who requested the license capacity, the date of the request, and the date that the license is required.
When the activity is approved, a reservation is created for the requested license capacity.
When an activity is completed, canceled, or closed, all license reservations associated with the activity are deleted.
Calculating available and reserved capacity
- The Reserved Capacity field is increased with the additional capacity that you reserve. The value in the Reserved Capacity field is cumulative and displays the total quantity of capacity that is reserved for a license.
- The quantity of available capacity is recalculated, and the reserved capacity is subtracted from the amount of capacity available. The value in the Available Capacity field is updated with the revised calculation.
The Available Capacity field displays the total amount of entitled capacity minus allocated and reserved capacity. Typically the total quantity of all internal allocations plus reserved capacity should be less than or equal to the license capacity. However, because some licenses permit capacity realignment based on a reevaluation of capacity growth over some period of time before the license agreement expires, it is possible to have a negative quantity in the Available Capacity field.
If the total license capacity is exceeded, determine whether the license agreement permits additional capacity to be added at a later date. If the license capacity cannot be realigned later, you can adjust license allocations so that they do not exceed the license capacity available.
