Generic assets and CIs

An automatically created authorized asset is called a generic asset. It is created during automated linking whenever an authorized asset cannot be found, matched, and linked to an authorized CI. Likewise, a generic CI is an authorized CI that is created automatically whenever an authorized CI cannot be found, matched, and linked.

Generics are created when none currently exist, in order to automatically link assets and CIs. The asset-CI reconciliation task creates a generic asset or CI when a specific authorized asset or CI cannot be found but is needed by the business for asset or configuration management. The generic's data, though minimal, allows you to manage the new authorized asset or CI before one has been discovered or created manually with more complete data. Generics are like any other authorized assets or CIs, but have a GENERIC classification ID and contain less data. As more data becomes available (as their associated deployed assets or actual CIs are imported, for example), this new data can be added through promotion or manually.

A new generic asset or CI is populated with one or more of the attributes identified in the table that follows. Generic assets and CIs have a minimal amount of data. For the generic asset, the asset number is autogenerated, the generic asset is linked to a CI, and the rest of the asset's attributes are copied from the linked CI. Likewise for the generic CI: the configuration item number is generated automatically, the generic CI is linked to the asset, and the rest of the CI's attributes are copied from the linked asset.
